In line with our commitment to fostering trust within our community, I’m disclosing that ChickCozy reached out to us after seeing a few of our poultry articles. They approached us with a proposition: they wanted us to evaluate their automatic chicken door. In the spirit of transparency, we accepted their offer gladly as we are always interested in learning about new tools for the homestead.

Originally, we tried the door for 30 days, exposing it to wind, cold, rain, and sun. This is our honest review of the ChickCozy Automatic Chicken Coop Door, not only for that first month but also after we’ve been using the original door for over two years. It is still going strong, but ChickCozy has taken feedback from chicken keepers and improved its design to introduce a new version that we have now tested for another 30 days.

We found it to be easy to install and set up, as well as reliable. Our automatic chicken door never failed to open when it was supposed to or close when it was time. The one exception was when something was caught in the door’s track (old version). The failure was on my part, though, because I had not checked the tract nor verified that the door was closed before I went to bed.

We have our door set using the timer method. We have a lot of gray, wet days here in the fall and winter, so we decided to opt for the timer instead of the light sensor, which may be misled by the cloudy days. We’ve had to adjust it twice as the seasons are changing, but it is quick and easy to do.

What Our Chickens Thought About The Automatic Door

Installing our door meant relocating where the chickens entered and exited their coop, but before we finished setting it up, they were already checking it out. They had no problem entering or exiting the coop through the door.

The first few times the door opened and closed, they chittered about the sound, but they quickly identified the sound as meaning it was time to get up or be shut in for the night. They have no complaints.

A Word of Caution

I would be remiss in my responsibility to you if I did not offer a word of caution regarding the use of this or any other automatic device for your flocks.

• You are responsible for the safety and well-being of your flock. This means you should check any automatic device you use daily. We recommend that you at least put your eyes on the door in the morning or evening to be sure it’s open or closed. We can see our coop from the back porch, so it’s easy for me to do.
• If using the older version, make sure you inspect the tract at least once a day to be sure there’s nothing blocking it from operating properly. To help maintain the tract, be sure it’s installed at least two inches above the bedding in the coop. This will prevent the chickens from scratching it up into the tract or from carrying it on their feet across it.
